In honor of Django's 100th birthday (January 23, 2010) the Selmer corporation had the idea to reissue 10 more Selmer guitars. They approached one of the most accomplished luthiers in France and had him build two prototypes. The first one, #881, is now owned by Bireli Lagrene. This one is the second prototype which is #943.
Selmer was very impressed with these replicas but in the end decided it was too much trouble to get back into the guitar business after all these years. So these two prototypes are all that was built. Considering their rarity, they will likely be nearly as collectible as vintage Selmers themselves.
No detail was overlooked in the construction of this guitar. Hardware, label, headstock logo, woods, bracing, binding, etc are all indistinguishable from the originals (See the comparison photos, replica #943 is on the left, original vintage #863 is on the right). The guitar features Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Spruce top, and a Walnut neck. The top has a real pliage just like the old Selmers do. This guitar was also skillfully antiqued to give it the look and feel of 1940s era Selmer.
And the question that everyone want's to know the answer to, how does it sound? The answer is AMAZING!!! You won't find a new guitar that sounds more like a real Selmer. Fantastic projection and the tone is dead on Selmer. Gently rounded highs, warm midrange, and present, growling lowend that adds dimension without muddiness.
